Die Championship of Nations (21.-26.07.2013) haben begonnen. Es folgt ein Bericht vom ersten Tag.

RC Laser Championship of Nations - Day 1

The inaugural Championship of Nations hosted by West Lancs Yacht Club, The home of the famous 24 hour race, Commenced on the 21st July 2013, with competitors from UK, Holland, France, USA and Australia.

Racing commenced using the HMS flight scoring system, With the wind in the east it allowed the OD Clive Porter to set a long figure 8 course with a perfect beat, with 'B' sailings being the choice of the race, the B flight seeding race started this historic event.

This was won by Shaun Holbeche(GBR), second Julien Drouillot(FRA) and Dave Bedford(AUS). The second seeding race was won by Dave Fowler(GBR) second Taco Fabern(NED) and third Marc Albiges(FRA)

With the seeding now sorted the main races started, the morning was dominated by Holbeche with him gaining 2 bullets, Neil Coleman(GBR) and Albiges following in second place respectively.

After lunch Fowler's mojo returned, with him gaining the next 3 bullets with Albiges two seconds and Fabern(NED) one. The last race of the day was sailed in 'C' sails and was won by Fabern(NED) with Albiges in second.

RC Laser Championship of Nations - Day 2

Day 2 of the inaugural Championship of Nations hosted by West Lancs Yacht Club, The home of the famous 24 hour race.

The mojo was still in force for Fowler, with every race being fought to the last inches at the finishing line and the top 10 all passing through the line in minutes (one race 10 seconds) of the lead boat, the competitiveness of the racing was superb.

Due to the wind dropping, then backing and finally vanishing for a time, then the dreaded protest, the first ones of the event took their toll on the racing and only 4 races were completed (8 heats).

Fowler gained 3 bullets and a second, to increase his lead margin to 10 points over Holbeche who had a mixed day with a bullet and other top 6 placings, Fabern managed a 2,3,5,6, leaving the top 3 unchanged.

With a forecast for day 3 wind strength being light to yuck, the lay day might have to be brought into play.

Der Bericht vom dritten Tag

RC Laser Championship of Nations - Day 3

Due to Thunder storms, no fixed wind direction, and a protest left from the day before, racing didn't commence until 13:30, with course laid the B flight of race 12 commenced, this was led from start to finish by 305 Marc Albiges FRA, with the top 4 of the B flight being promoted to the A flight.

Albiges continued his domination of the 12th race, keeping 840 Dave Fowler GBR at bay, who was on Albiges' rudder for the whole race waiting for the mistake, but Albiges sailed the perfect race and the 2 boats finished seconds apart, with Alan Tickle in third.

The wind slowly veered all afternoon causing the RO to keep rotating the course between flights.

Fowler took the next 2 races with 102 Neil Coleman GBR placed 2 in one and Albiges, again with very close racing, with the third taken by 39 Skip Reaser USA and 08 Julien Drouillot FRA.

With the last race of the day Fowler got called over the line and had to restart, 01 Taco Fabern NED lead from start to finish, with Albiges and Fowler on his transom swapping 2nd place the whole of the second lap, only half a boat length separated the boats at the finish leaving Fowler in 3rd.

Day 4 was a lay day with no racing, with competitors and their families set about visiting the local area. During the afternoon, helms from the Netherlands, France and UK came together, talking sailing, drinking tea, and bonding international relations.

RC Laser Championship of Nations - Day 5

9 Races were held today, that's 18 flights, the wind was true and constant, slowly veering to the sea breeze when the tide turned at 14:15, with the wind increasing in strength for the 'C' sail to be aired for the first time in this event.

Again the main Battle was between Fowler and Albiges with all the bullets being shared 5,4. The day saw the return of Skip Reaser to the top 3 races, with him leading several of the races, but couldn't keep either of the top 2 at bay to the finish line.

By the end of the day Fowler had increased his lead to 19 points over Albiges, Fabern had a bad day visiting the B fleet several times and is 20 points behind in 3rd.

RC Laser Championship of Nations - Overall

Dave Fowler wins the RC Laser Championship of Nations

The final day was upon us, the wind was a light 6 - 8mph meaning the 'A' rig was the sail choice being used, with the course set (Quite a long one) and the racing commenced.

There were the guys with calculators trying to work out what Marc Albiges FRA 305 needed to do close the gap. Dave Fowler GBR 840 on the other hand, just needed to play the keep out of the way game, which for some reason went out of the window in the first 2 races, seeing him once again at the front of the fleet and gaining 2 bullets, with Albiges only getting a 3rd and 4th, the 2nds went to Skip Reaser USA 39 and Taco Fabern NED 01.

Now was the time for Fowler to play the keep out of the protest room game, with him taking two 4ths and 2 seconds in the remaining races. Reaser who had found the correct pedal at last got the bullet he so desperately wanted; skilfully holding Albiges and Neil Coleman GBR 102 at bay for the full race all 3 crossed the line in 5 seconds.

In the 4th race, a brilliant start helped Julien Drouillot FRA 08 lead from start to finish keeping Rod Popham AUS 42, and Coleman behind him.

The last 2 races were won by Fabern with Fowler in 2nd piping Rod Wallenberg NED 36 in the last race on the finishing line by 20mm.

Now it was all over, with people packing away and talking about the event, at the international meeting we had earlier in the week it was thought a week might be two long, but in the end we had a week of great competitive, yet sportsmanlike racing. A total of 30 races had been completed, that's 60 flights (2 flights per race).

The final deed of the day was the Prize giving dinner, a great 5 course meal, provided by the catering staff of West Lancs Yacht Club. With the organisers, RO and his team, and the catering staff thanked, and presented with gifts, the prizegiving commenced.

All the Helms were given a trophy with their names on for competing in the first Championship of Nations, along with a 'B' sail (provided by Peterkin, the main importer of the RC Laser) which were signed by all of the helms and PRO, one was presented to the club as a thank you for running the event. The prizes were handed out by WLYC Commodore, Ian Donaldson.

The Persistence trophy, given to the person who started all races but was in last place, went to Phillipe Croute (FRA).

Best Improver, where their results showed overall improvement at the end of the week, was Skip Reaser (USA).

Winning Team (team leaders were picked from the top 2 of the seeding races and the rest picked at random) was Taco Fabern, Neil Coleman, Rob Wallenberg and Nick Hodshon. They won by 1 point, and only 6 points separated all the teams.

The event finished with the RC Laser Family growing with international friendships, and looking forward to the next Championship of Nations in 2 years' time.
